Trish Kaplan challenges her body with adventures few women would undertake. Inspired last year by a fierce desire to test her body in a beautiful and remote mountain you can see only on foot, she booked a trip through Wilderness Travel in Berkeley California to Pakistan, (where women have no rights,) for a 16-day trek on foot to Snow Lake. .... A Girl On A Football Team?
When soccer star Liz Heaston walked into her classroom in September of 1997 as a 20-year-old junior on her college campus of Willamette University in Salem, OR, little did she know that she was about to become the first female to play football on a college team. As she strolled into her course on coaching athletics, the professor, who also doubled as the small university's head football coach, greeted her with, "Well, Liz, want to try out for the team?" Liz thought he was kidding....(more)
What Makes A Girl?
Are we wired at birth or can we be shaped to be female over time?
That's the question Sharon Crumb of the Guardian (London) asked me this morning. She's writing an article about the boy whose penis was mutilated in a botched circumcision when he was 8 months old in 1964. His parents were advised at Johns Hopkins, where world-famous sexologist John Money taught, to change him into a girl...."(more)
Gina Gold is a survivor. She's been to hell and back in her 33 years, and she's lived to write about it.
Before I met Gina for the first time, I tried to imagine what a former stripper would look like: godawful dyed hair, 6-inch sparkly fingernails, makeup troweled on to hide the hardness that life usually grinds into those kinds of faces. When I finally met her, she certainly didnât look like what I thought a stripper would look like. Here was a beautiful black woman with flowing black hair (she has since shaved her head), soft red lips, and smooth, healthy skin. Her quick smile and articulate speech surprised me. Her openness was charming and she sparkled with a zest for life....(more)

And let me tell you it was hell, sheer hell, waiting to do something about it.

Rude Women: Shame and Power
While a friend of mine went to grad school, she was very poor and lived in a terrible part of a large city. Her most precious possession, necessary to her survival, was an old junker car she had inherited from her grandmother. She parked it on the street in front of her rundown apartment building, and every night listened as the neighborhood thugs smashed car windows, hot wired engines, and roared off.... (more)
The Sentry of My Womb
My friend told me to pitch a fit the next time they start. "Do something to grab their attention and tell them you don't want to hear it anymore," she said. "Doesn't matter if you have to scream in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, just do something to make them stop."... (more)
40 Ways Men Fail In Bed
1) NOT KISSING FIRST. Avoiding her lips and diving straight for the erogenous zones makes her feel like you're paying by the hour and trying to get your money's worth by cutting out nonessentials. A properly passionate kiss is the ultimate form of foreplay.... (more)
Labor of Love Or A Birth Plan? Hah! (My Birth Story)
A year ago today my water broke, and thus began my entirely new life of joy with my daughter, Olivia.
It was a cold autumn evening like tonight, and Misha and I were eating a late dinner after our last birthing class. I was perched on the stool and suddenly felt a moist discharge÷not really a gush of water, more like a small leak. Enough, however, to know that my water had broken. I remember the immediate rush and excitement÷it was beginning..... (more)
The Bathing Costume
I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing costume. When I was a child, the bathing costume for the woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure. Boned, trussed, and reinforced, these costumes were not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a darn good job. ... (more)
Modeling A Lush Body
I suspect people are shocked when I tell them I'm an artist's model in New York City. I have breasts that are round and make a statement, a tummy that demands to be seen, and strong thighs and legs. I used to think I was fat. I started dieting at age eight when someone on the playground yelled, "You're fat.". ...(more)

Working in A Sex -Toy Store
It wasn't like I was a stranger to talking about sex. I mean, I did disclose all the gory details about my first sexual encounter with public radio listeners all over the country. And most of my best friends are guys, so I was pretty used to talking about sex around people who I knew I would never see naked....(more)
Book Review - The Guide To Getting It On!
Independent publishers do the durnedest things, like calling their house Goofy Foot Press and expecting people to take the place seriously.
But what can you do, says psychoanalyst-turned-publisher Paul Joannides: if you think that existing sex-education books are so boring they put people to sleep instead of that other thing they might do in bed, why not write a humorous sex book that takes clinical terms out of sex and puts the oomph back in for all to share?....(more)
Book Review - Getting It On: A Condom Reader
I recently emerged from a six-year relationship that took up the better half of my twenties, not to mention the nineties, and it felt a lot like coming out of a dark movie theater on a bright and sunny day. It took a while to adjust my vision, orientation, and context--where the hell had the time gone? While I'd lingered in the tiresome droll of "monogamy," "the birth control pill," "commitment," blah blah, my friends were having sex--lots of sex....(more)
The Healing Choice: Your Guide to Emotional Recovery After An Abortion
Abortion is not a frivolous choice. No woman sets out to create and then terminate, a possible life; but, over the centuries, millions of women have had abortions, and millions more will continue to terminate unwanted pregnancies regardless of social, religious or legislative opinion. Unlike divorce or the death of a loved one, or even a miscarriage, abortion is a significant personal experience that is not publicly recognized. A woman's
emotional journey from conception to termination is often isolated, buried in her psychological underground....(more)

A Soldier's Daughter Never Reads Cosmo
Once upon a time, there was a land of wealth and prosperity (kind of). All the people were relatively happy (many more than others were), and all seemed fair (to the ones at the top) in this land. There was only one problem (of many): these people were plagued by a nation of Demons. Each and every person had a Demon attached to them, a Demon everybody could see. These were Demons so horrible and so evil that everybody's greatest fear was letting theirs get too big, and therefore be ostracized from society...(more)
